Flexrotor Demonstrates Persistent Airborne Communications Relay at BOLD QUEST 21.2 Demonstration

November 17, 2021

We are pleased to announce that the Flexrotor unmanned aircraft equipped with the L3Harris Small Secure Datalink (SSDL) V3 successfully demonstrated how our versatile VTOL Group 2 UAS (NATO Class I UAS) can deliver powerful C4ISR capabilities in austere combat environments at the BOLD QUEST 21.2 Coalition Capability Demonstration. During several long endurance flights at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, the SSDL V3 equipped Flexrotor was the airborne communication network node that linked Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACS) with the Air Support Operations Center (ASOC), demonstrating critical communication relay mission support.

Flexrotor is a 32-hour endurance (fuel and payload dependent), multi-INT unmanned aircraft optimized for operations that require mobility, capability and the smallest logistical footprint in austere locations. The SSDL V3 is a dual-channel airborne radio providing multi-domain communications interoperability for SWaP constrained air vehicles.

“We appreciate the U.S. Air Force sponsorship of this unique opportunity and L3Harris’ tireless support of the integration and testing of SSDL V3 in this communications relay demonstration,” said Ben Motazed, VP of Business Development at Aerovel Corporation.

“Teamed with a great partner from Aerovel, we successfully validated the proof of concept for airborne communication networks enabling advanced MANET network connectivity,” said Troy Lundquist, Senior Account Manager at L3Harris Tactical Communications.
